Strengthening the quality of education at NEP TTI
In phase one of G-Youth, the North Eastern Province Technical Training Institute was strengthened through a rigorous marketing and outreach campaign that helped NEP TTI increase its enrollment of Garissan youth approximately by 50%. This marketing and promotion of NEP TTI not only increased enrollment of Garissan youth but also enabled them appreciate the benefits of technical skills training--especially for those youth unable to get into a university.
During phase one, G-Youth also conducted a labor market assessment collaboratively with the Ministry of Higher Education Science and Technology to identify markets where employment opportunities exist for NEP TTI graduates. One of the key findings in the a Labor Market Assessment as well as in a cross‐sectoral, country‐wide youth assessment conducted for USAID shows that the ICT industry is a strong emerging market with strong growth potential in Kenya generally but especially in North Eastern Province. The LMA report stated that the ICT sector has “…the most significant immediate employment opportunities” in NEP especially in the areas of PC troubleshooting, networking and network maintenance.”
In the second phase, G‐Youth strengthen NEP TTI in new ways: first by setting‐up a CISCO Networking Academy where youth can get training in IT Essential and CISCO Certified Networking Associate (CCNA) for a nominal fee; second by helping to strengthen alliances with private sector employers for internships, apprenticeships and employment of their graduates. The CISCO Networking Academy will duly serve as an ICT Centre of Excellent. Support to NEP TTI through the establishment of a CISCO Networking Academy/ICT Centre of Excellence addresses the local labor market need for certified professionals in the ICT sector while increasing Garissa youth’s employability.
